The Doctrine Of God Is Love - 1139 Words

This paper will reflect the history of the interpretation of 1 John 4:8. In book one John states (4:7) that, â€Å"love is from God,† and then he continues in (4:8) that, â€Å"God is love.† Undoubtedly, even nonbelievers may perhaps exhibit agape love for others. Agnostic or unbelieving parents frequently possess sacrificial or agape love for their families and or their spouses. Soldiers who are nonbelieving might throw their bodies on a grenade to spare the lives of the comrades. These type loving acts stem from God’s shared grace. This kind of sacrificial or agape love is so profound and altruistic, however, it can never be considered Gods Agape love. John desires us to recognize that if we see sincere biblical love, it originated with God not with the person, for He is the only foundation of love in the world. John asserts that God is love (1 John 4:8). God does not simply love; he is love. All things that God does, stems from his love. When John explains, â€Å"God is love†, virtually everybody willingly holds to that thought, and on the other hand it is often misinterpreted and taken to non-scriptural level. Some misunderstand it to mean that because God is love, He might overlook or be lenient in regard to sin. Others will try to say that, God can never condemn anyone to the eternal punishment of hell, because God is Love. When the letters of John were written, it was in an era of struggle for the church.
